Footwear

One type of footwear worn with kimono is a wooden or vinyl sandal called geta. Their height can range from two to seven inches and is intended to prevent the hem of kimono from touching the ground. Another type of shoe is zori, a flat thong sandal made of vinyl or tatami (woven straw).

Maiko wear tall, wedge shaped sandals with a bell inside called okobo. Traditional Japanese footwear is usually worn with tabi, white buttoned socks with a split toe to accommodate the sandal's strap.

Today, black vinyl zori and geta are the type of footwear most commonly worn with kimono on formal occasions.
