Research Opportunities The Elemental Analysis Facility at The Field Museum welcomes academic researchers and students who wish to collaborate with our scientists on the analysis of museum specimens or on topics of interest to our research group. Thanks to a NSF grant for Archaeometry for 2008-2011, the EAF will be able to subsidize a limited number of research projects primarily related to LA-ICP-MS analysis. Subventions will be available to offset lab costs and for graduate students to help with airfare and accommodation costs when coming from outside the Chicago area. Proposal must be received by March 31 and September 30, each year. Projects dealing with the adaptable chamber laser ablation system or the regular laser ablation system are welcome. Sample size for regular laser ablation is limited to the size of the chamber, a cylinder 6 cm in diameter and 5 cm tall. Smaller sample sizes (<1 cm diameter) are preferred. We can collaborate on the development of new analytical methods for specific applications. All parties who wish to undertake a collaborative project in the lab should forward a short proposal (2-4 page) for consideration. The proposal should address the research problem, the size of the specimens, and the type, number, and contexts of the samples. Curriculum vitae for the principal collaborator(s) should also be included. All projects must have this documentation. Proposals to the NSF program will be evaluated by a panel composed of archaeological scientists from both within The Field Museum and from the discipline at large. Proposals will be selected according to their feasibility and relevance for the archaeological question to be addressed, as well as their application to the unique advantages the EAF has to offer to the archaeological community. Proposals for projects of interest that cannot be funded through the NSF grant can be submitted and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. For these projects the base rate for the use of the LA-ICP-MS lab is $90/hour.
