Past and on-going projects at the EAF lab:

We are developing projects related to natural and synthetic glass, ceramics and copper alloys in the field of anthropology.

Obsidian:
Mesoamerican obsidian sourcing:
  • samples from museum collections from San Jose, Belize and from field collections from Oaxaca, Mexico, dating from the Formative to the Post-Classic (Gary Feinman).

South American obsidian sourcing:

  • samples from museum collections from Tiwanaku and from field collections from Cerro Baul, Peru (Ryan Williams) and from Andahuaylas, Peru (Brian Bauer, UIC), dating from the Formative to the Late Intermediate Period (0-1400 AD).

  • geological samples from Alca Peru (Kurt Rademaker, University of Maine)

New Guinean obsidian sourcing (John Terrell, Mark Golitko)

South West obsidian sourcing:

  • samples from the Paul Martin collection (Stephen Nash, formerly FM, now Denver Museum of Nature and Science).

Synthetic glass:
Circulation of glass and glazed ceramic in the Indian Ocean:

  • glass beads and vessel samples from field collections from Mtwapa, Kenya (Chap Kusimba, Laure Dussubieux) and Chaul, India (Vishwas Gogte, Deccan College, Pune, Laure Dussubieux).

  • White and blue and celadon ceramic samples from field collections from Mtwapa and Chaul (Chap Kusimba, Rahul Oka, UIC).

Circulation of glass in Southeast Asia:

  • Early glass beads samples from field collections from Khao Sam Kaeo (Berenice Bellina, CNRS, UMR 7528, « Mondes iranien et indien », Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris III and James Lankton, UCL, Institute of Archaeology, Laure Dussubieux)

  • glass vessels samples from Sumatra, 9th c. – 15th c. A.D. (Daniel Perret, Ecole Française d’Extrême-Orient, Centre de Jakarta and Heddy Surachman, Pusat Penelitian dan Pengembangan Arkeologi Nasional,Indonesia, Laure Dussubieux).

Ceramic:
Wari ceramics and clay sourcing:

  • field collections from Cerro Baul and Cerro Mejia Peru (Ryan Williams, Donna Nash, UIC) and Moquegua Valley clays, and field collections from Conchopata Peru (N. Sharatt, UIC in collaboration with W. Isbell and A. Cook), 600-1000 AD.

Linienbandkeramik ceramics, field collections from Belgium (Larry Keeley and Mark Golitko, UIC)

New Guinea ceramic sourcing (John Terrel with Mark Golitko)

Sourcing of Maya blue (Dean Arnold, Gary Feinman and Nicole Roth, UIC)

Philippine ceramics (Laura Junker and Lisa Niziolek, UIC )

Chinese Neolithic ceramic (Anne Underhill, Lisa Niziolek and Rory Dennison)

Copper alloy:
Matisse Bronze Sculpture (Laure Dussubieux with Ann Boulton, Baltimore Museum of Art)

Characterization of copper alloy artifacts from Cerro Baul, Peru (Laure Dussubieux with Ryan Williams)

Provenance of 16th-18th century copper-based artifacts found in Virginia (Christopher Stevenson, Amy Creech, Virginia Department of Historic Resources, Laure Dussubieux)

Other:
Dietary patterns from elemental analysis of teeth and bones from Puerto Rico (Antonio Curet, William Pesle, Formerly FM, now UIC and Jason Laffoon, UIC).

The EAF lab also contributed to projects outside the filed of archaeology.

In Geology:

  • Kimberlitic rocks from southern Africa and Old Indian Ocean crust with ICP-MS (Philip Janney, formerly FM, now Arizona State University).

  • Measurement of the Ni and Fe concentrations in meteorites using ICP-MS (David Cook, University of Chicago).

  • Trace element zoning in sanidine of the Bishop Tuff (Guilherme Gualda, University of Chicago).

In Botany:

  • determination of heavy elements in lichens using ICP-MS (Eimy Rivas Plata, Universidad Nacional de Ingenieria (Lima – Peru))
