  Schuster's collections were made in the provinces of Shaanxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Hebei, Shandong, and Shanxi. Most objects, however, were collected in Shaanxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, and Yunnan. Traveling by cart, boat, and foot, he not only purchased a large number of splendidly decorated textiles, but also recorded exactly where each one had been made and used, sometimes even recording the names of the individual women who produced the textiles.(choose any image to view an enlarged map)
