The Field Museum's archaeological and historical holdings include the art of Benin, once a West African kingdom. Most of these pieces-- wooden sculptures, fans of animal hide, articles of cast and beaten brass and of ivory--were created before 1897, some perhaps as early as the seventeenth century. Visitors can see representatives of this collection in the Africa exhibit.
