| When Napoleons armies moved into Egypt in 1798, they were followed by another expeditionary force of naturalists, archaeologists, cartographers, architects, and historians charged by Napoleon with the task of publishing the exhaustive and aptly titled Description de lEgypte. Appearing from 1809 to 1828, the eight volumes of text in small folio and the twelve large folio volumes of engraved plates constitute an impressive inventory of the cultural and natural history of the country.
