The Field Museum's Asia collections include historical and contemporary art and artifacts from Japan. Added to the original Japanese items from the 1893 Columbian Exposition, gifts to the Museum have resulted in a lavish collection that ranges from sword furnishings to books illustrated with woodblock prints. The delicate craft obvious in some of the lacquerware (netsuke and inro) foreshadows Japans success in the manufacture of precision-made goods. |
