| The Naxi or Nakhi are one of the many non-Chinese-speaking ethnic groups who live in Chinas mountainous Yunnan province. They retain a writing system that is unique in the world: a pictographic script based on names and sounds in their Tibeto-Burmese language. This particular manuscript on bark, apparently a divination manual, was given to Berthold Laufer by Joseph F. Rock, a noted American explorer of the Himalayas.
