In 1930, The Field Museum commissioned sculptor Malvina Hoffman to execute a large series depicting people from various parts of the world. Ms. Hoffman, one of the foremost sculptors of the United States, had trained in New York and Paris and was a pupil of Auguste Rodin. Working over a period of just five years, Ms. Hoffman completed the 104 sculptures in the collection of life-sized heads, busts, and full figures, chiefly in bronze. This monumental work was displayed in the exhibit Hall of the Races of Mankind from 1933 to 1968. Shown is the bronze statue of a Tamil man of Southern India.
