Charles H. Carpenter, The Field Museum's first and chief photographer from 1899 to 1947, produced more than 3,000 negatives of the Philippine and Native Americans living on the Anthropology Reservation of the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. The Anthropology Reservation served as a living exhibit of native peoples from around the world. Carpenter photographed the Native Americans on the fairgrounds as the tourists would have seen them, and as portraits against simple studio backdrops.
