The Field Museum holds the largest collection of Madagascar textiles in North America. This finely woven lamba be (burial shroud) was the property of the last king of the Betsileo in Madagascar. The silver beaded border reads, “RAVOLANDROIZA / TONAHAVITA 1915 RAINITSINBANO / TOPONI / VIVE LA FRANCE”; translated: “Ravolandro made this, 1915, Rainitsinbano is the owner.” Wild silk, woven in two panels.
