The SU site, named after the brand mark for the local Stevenson - Underwood Ranch, is a large Mogollon pithouse village located seven miles west of Reserve in Catron County, New Mexico (Figure 1).

Paul Martin, John Rinaldo, and their colleagues excavated eight pithouses (A, B, C, D, D-1, E, F, G) and one surface room (Surface Room 1) in 1939 (Figure 2). In 1941, they excavated eight pithouses (H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P) and two surface rooms (Surface Room 2, Surface Room 3. (Note that Surface Room 3 had, at one time, been called "K" (see Martin and Rinaldo 1946:247). After a hiatus for the duration of World War II, they returned to excavate ten more pithouses (Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y [also known as Kiva Y], Z) in 1946 (Figure 3). Test Trenches one through nine were excavated in 1939, Test Trenches 10 through 33 were excavated in 1941, and Test Trenches 34 and 35 were excavated in 1946.
