Figure 1: Map showing the location of the Kiehne Site

Kiehne Pueblo is a small pueblo in west central New Mexico and was excavated by Martin and crew in 1951 (Figure 1). A total of 166 artifacts from Kiehne Pueblo are currently in storage at the Field Museum, though only six of these were catalogued prior to the onset of the Martin Project in 1997.

One aspect of the data associated with Kiehne Pueblo is particularly problematic. The subsite information indicates that a test trench at least 12m long and (in places) 6m wide and (in places) 60cm deep was excavated, but this is not the way that Martin and crew excavated pueblos, but is the way that they excavated rockshelters and caves. In addition, there is no evidence for architectural features in the subsite information as it is recorded. Given these, Martin Project staff changed the name from "Kiehne Pueblo" to the less specific "Kiehne Site"

Artifacts

Two awls (catalog numbers 262388 and 262389), one bone tube (262390), one knapping tool or flaker (262391), one animal figurine or effigy (262392) and one shell bracelet fragment (262393) were catalogued by Martin and crew on their return to the Museum. Martin Project staff catalogued 52 faunal remains and 108 sherds; none of these have been identified or typed.

Excavation Records

There are no excavation records for the Kiehne Site on file at the Field Museum.

Photographic Records

There are no photographs of the Kiehne Site at the Field Museum.

Accession and Catalog Files

Catalog numbers 262388 - 262393 are included in Accession File 2471. All information in the catalog books has been transferred to the electronic database.

Prospects

Given the paucity of contextualizing data for this excavation is disturbing and prohibits productive analytical use of the artifacts for other than the typological and typological purposes. On the other hand, the subsite provenience information seems detailed and somewhat reliable if we are correct in determining that this is a cave site, not a pueblo.
