On June 2, 1894, shortly after $1,000,000 in start-up funds were secured from retailer Marshall Field, The Field Columbian Museum opened its doors in the Palace of the Fine Arts building in Jackson Park, where it remained until its current building was completed in Grant Park in 1921. Highlights of the WCE Collection, many of which are still on display or are on loan to other institutions, include:

Warren K. Moorehead’s Hopewell Archaeological Collection: Eight-thousand pieces from the 2,000 year-old type-site
Lt. Robert E. Peary’s Collection of Inuit material culture from Greenland
Eighty-five masks from Sri Lanka that were in the Ceylon Commission’s display
More than 500 costumes and puppets that constitute The Java Commission’s complete theatrical ensemble
A 23’ x 13’ silk tapestry made by the Japanese Commission for the WCE.
George Dorsey’s South American archaeological collections from sites such as Ancon, Cuzco, and Sierra Gorda in Peru
Eduoard Remenyi’s 1,000-piece Collection of ethnographic objects from the Zulu, Bantu, Mfengu, and others in Africa.
