Japanese Commission Tapestry

This immense silk tapestry was specially commissioned for the WCE. Designed by Jinbe Kawashima, and executed by multiple weavers, the tapestry depicts a religious festival at the Nikko Toshogu shrine. The scene contains the figures of 1,500 men, each one unique in design, and is bordered by a pattern of phoenixes and chrysanthemums.

The Conservation department recently undertook a massive project to restore the tapestry in preparation for exhibition in Nagoya, Osaka, and Tokyo. After a successful year-long tour, the tapestry has safely returned to its home in Chicago.
