The Java Commision Collection
One of the most popular attractions on the Midway of the WCE was the Java Village. A reconstruction of a town in West Java, the cultural exhibition housed participants from the villages of Sinagar and Parakan Salak. The West Javanese (or “Sundanese”) individuals demonstrated traditional dying and weaving techniques, and offered a variety of musical and theatrical performances. Prominent among these events were wayang dramas, involving stories told through either skillful puppetry or graceful dance, that were accompanied by a gamelan orchestra.
After the exposition, G.C.F.W. Mundt and E.J Kerkhoven purchased most of the items that made up the Java Village from the Java-Chicago Syndicate. As a result, The Field Musem has an astounding collection of Javanese objects, including bracelets, masks, leather costumes, sandals, marionettes, shadow puppets, headdresses, skirts and “one of the finest sets of gamelan musical instruments outside of Java.”
