Ceylon Commission Masks

Representatives of the Sinhalese people exhibited a number of artifacts at the WCE, the most spectacular of which were over eighty wooden yakka dancing masks. Many of these masks represent specific ailments, and are used in ceremonies designed to aid both afflicted individuals, and entire communities, in dealing with mental and physical disease.

The masks were collected by Paul Pieris, the leading archaeologist/ anthropologist of Sri Lanka during the British period. After the WCE, the collection was exhibited at the 1904 St. Louis Louisiana Purchase Exposition, after which S.C. Simms facilitated the purchase of the masks by The Field Museum from the Ceylon Government Commision.
