Highlands,

North Carolina

(N 35º 1'; W 83º 8')

Principal Investigators Drs. Qiuxin Wu and Greg Mueller get help from assistant David Quist surveying plots at Highlands.

Highlands, North Carolina, located in the southern Appalachian Mountains, southeastern U.S., is close to a number of good collecting areas, e.g., Whiteside Mtn., Blue Valley, and Coweeta. The vegetation of this area is in general characterized by a richness in deciduous plant species and mixed mesophytic forests dominated by oaks, hickories, pines, and Canadian hemlocks. Two sampling plots have been established near Highlands, both in mixed forests. Highlands Biological Station provides excellent working and living facilities for selected research programs in this area.
