Our "Fern DNA Database" attempts to put on record DNA-availability, DNA-sequence data, and important voucher and source information for various species of ferns and "fern allies" being used in the labs of Principal Investigators Kathleen Pryer, Paul Wolf, Chris Haufler, Tom Ranker, and Alan Smith (see Credits below). Use of this database enables one to access the 700+ records currently available and in use by these investigators. The database is updated regularly at the Field Museum, as additional taxa and data become available to us.
In order to access our "Fern DNA Database", you must have access to the Claris program FileMaker Pro (preferably version 4.0; see www.claris.com). Once this program is open, set FileMaker Pro preferences to TCP/IP and follow these instructions to access the database:
- Under File menu, click "Open"
- Click on "Hosts" button in pop-up window
- Another pop-up window will appear with the option to select "Local hosts" or "Specify hosts...".
- Click on "Specify hosts..."
- In the new pop-up window type in the following IP number: 216.0.14.81
- You now can access the Fern Database. A password is not required for read-only privileges.

Database design and management is the creative handiwork of Jeffrey S. Hunt, Field Museum of Natural History.
Initial coordination and fusion of fern databases at Field Museum of Natural History, Utah State University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Kansas, and University of Colorado was done with assistance from Ankur Vaghani, University of Illinois at Chicago (1998 NSF summer REU intern).
