5. Adding numbers, score lines and bar lines

This is the final step in composing the plate. Add a New Layer on the top of all the other layers [A]; work in this layer for adding numbers, score lines and bar lines to the plate (important!).

a. Numbers.

• For black numbers make black the foreground color (under Toolbar); for white numbers use switch colors to make white the foreground color [B].
• Use Type Tool for the numbers [T on the keyboard]. With the mouse, click on a place on the plate where you want to place a number; and Type Tool options come up.
• Choose Helvetica Bold 12 point [C,D].
• Select Anti-aliased [E].
• Type the number you wish to enter; choose OK

While the number is selected (highlighted) you can use the arrow to drag it into proper position. Click anywhere on the page to deselect number. Click on a new place on the plate for the next number. Type Tool options come up; type the number you wish to enter; choose OK. Repeat for all numbers. (For Mycologia, there are restrictions for the fonts on figures: do not use Adobe Postscript fonts, TrueType fonts or system bitmap fonts. Helvetica is a good choice).

Instructions and demonstration are for Photoshop 3.0 where all the text can be placed directly in the same layer. In Photoshop 5.0, each individual piece of text (in this case each number) is placed in its own layer (labeled as 'T' in the right side of its layer box). You can leave each in its own layer but having all these layers can become cumbersome. In order to get all the text in one layer, you must:

• change each of the Type layers to a 'normal' layer: Under Layer menu (at the top of your screen): Choose Type: Render layer
• then starting at the top text layer, compress layers downward by choosing: under Layer menu: Merge Down. Do this for each consecutive layer containing text until you get one layer.
