  • Type: Indonesia, Java, Malang, in leaves of Bambusa sp., 23.ix.1901, leg. Zimmermann.
This fungus was originally described as a coelomycete. Hennings wrote "Est status pycnidicus Lophiella bambusae". Von Arx & Müller 1954 treated Discomycopsella as a synonym of Phyllachora, but Parbery (1967: 320-321) found that D. bambusae most likely is a confusion of the spermatial state of Phyllachora longinaviculata Parb. (Syn. Lophiella bambusae P. Henn.) and spores of an unknown fungus.

    bambusae P. Henn., Kusanobotrys Hedwigia 43: 141 (1904a).
  • Type: Japan, Honshû, Nikko, in leaves of Bambusa veitchii, viii.1900, leg. Kusano 328 (S!: collected "7.1900").
Von Höhnel (1911: 168) stated that "Kusanobotrys bambusae P. Henn ([Fragm. z. Mykol.] 610) ist keine Perisporiee, sondern eine etwas abweichende Capnodiacee". The ascomatal wall is KOH-, not KOH+ with a water-soluble red substance as in Perisporiopsis struthanthi P. Henn. and several other members of the Parodiopsidaceae, and the ascus wall is not multi-layered and a hamathecium is absent.

  • Type: India, Bombay Prov., Dharwar, in culms of Bambusa sp., v.1915, leg. G.S. Kulkarni (HCIO 26844).
Ascospores of this species are illustrated in a paper by Kale (1970: 196). In the same paper a new species, Valsaria indica Kale, is described on Acacia melanoxylon (not on Bambusa as given in Index of Fungi 4: 79, 1972).
We have examined a sample (India, Assam, Bunnihat, Research Centre, on indet. bamboo, 30iv.1979, leg. H.K. Baisya, IMI 238159), identified as Valsaria bambusae. The spores are very variable, (0-) 1-septate, brown, ellipsoid or somewhat fusiform with slightly truncated lower end, sometimes with that end attenuated into a proboscis-like projection. Some spores have distinct, coarse ribs, others have only small, scattered warts. A variation from reticulate to longitudinally ribbed was observed also by Ju et al. (1996: 426). The hamathecium consists of true paraphyses from some branched cells. The paraphyses are very broad at the base, but taper strongly and are very narrow at the ends. They are unbranched or with a few branches, and then without any septum near the bifurcation. Ju et al. (1996: 423) interpreted Valsaria as loculoascomycetous, but that should be tested in molecular studies.

G"§umann (1927: 167) had the opportunity to examine fresh material from the type locality 30 years after the fungus was described. G"§umann saw it also on Dendrocalamus flagellifer on Java, and on Bambusa blumeana on Celebes.

Rehm (l.c.) pointed out that this variety differed from the main variety by smaller ascomata (100-120 µm), fusiform asci (80 x 12-14 µm) and 4-(finally ?8-)celled spores (65-70 x 4-4.5 µm), which were blunt in the upper end, pointed in the lower end. The spores seem to be immature. Many are 1-septate (some are 3-septate) and filled with small globules. The asci have a small ring, that stains only faintly with cotton blue and Congo red. No conidia are to be seen in the asci. This species is not conspecific, but possibly congeneric, with Pleocryptospora bambusae (Speg.) J. Reid & C. Booth.

According to Farr (1968: 929), this fungus is not conspecific with Coscinopeltis argentinensis Speg., as claimed by Batista et al. (1960). She found that it has larger asci and larger, 2-celled spores. In a note added to the specimen in S, she stated "close to Microdothella". The fissitunicate asci and spores in the S material are not in a good condition. Most of the spores are 1-septate, but a few with 3 septa were seen.
