This species differs from P. bambusae in echinulate, much narrower ascospores and agrees in all details with P. oryzae I. Miyake. The second cell from the spore apex is not distinctly enlarged in a majority of the spores, but we do not have sufficient material for determining if that is a significant difference against P. oryzae.

Petrak (1928: 410) examined more than 100 "grauschwärzlichen Myzelrasen" and found only badly developed ascomata, which differed in several respects from the original description. It was not close to either Englerula nor Schiffnerula, and it was impossible to tell anything about the identity of the species on the basis of the type material. We have examined the type material in S and not found any fungus that agrees with the description of T. clavispora.

    coccoidea P. Henn., Seynesia Hedwigia 41: 141 (1902b).
  • Type: Indonesia, Java, on leaves of Bambusa sp., leg. Zimmermann (S!).
The material in S consists of one fragment of a bamboo leaf with 1 1/2 ascoma. Hennings stated that it resembles a Coccidae very much. Actually it seems to be associated with a scale insect on the leaf. We did not examine the very sparse material under the microscope.

    crenulatum Berk., Hypoxylon J. of Bot. 6: 226 (1854).
  • Syn.: ?Clypeosphaeria crenulata (Berk.) Sacc. 1883: 91.
  • Type: India, Mt. Nangki, Alt. 6000 feet, on decaying culms of Bambusa sp., leg. Hooker (K!).
We found that the type material in K contains only 3 ascomata and no squash mount should be made from this sparse material. Miller (1961: 134) and Ju & Rogers (1996: 261) stated that this is not a Hypoxylon species.

The position of this species is uncertain and it was provisionally placed in Trematosphaeria by Eriksson & Yue (1990 l.c.), who provided a description and illustrations.

  • Type: China, Kwangsi Prov., Yangso, on decaying culm of bamboo, 15.iii.1938, leg Teng 3216 (CUP).
Petrini (1993: 260) considered this species was close to Astrocystis, but did not propose a formal transfer.

    culmigena Penzig & Sacc., Acerbia Malpighia 11: 405 (1897a).
  • Type: Indonesia, Java, Tjibodas, on dead culms of Bambusa sp., leg. O. Penzig 121 (PAD!).
The original material consists of two small pieces of bamboo culm. Both have some conical, erumpent ascomata that are empty (the same result obtained by J. Walker, 30.v.1983). The ascomata are rather light brown, with darker apex. They burst through the culm as Pteridiospora javanica, and may be that species.
In the original material of Didymella maculosa (also from Indonesia) a Linocarpon species and some ascomata of Pteridiospora javanica were found. The ascospores were much shorter than given for Acerbia culmigena (c. 50 x 2 µm versus 95-100 x 3 µm), and it is not probable that they represent that species.
However, we found a fungus in the original material of Anthostomella [Astrocystis] mirabilis (Berk. & Broome) Höhn. var. obtecta Rehm that agrees very well with the original description of Acerbia culmigena. The conical perithecia are immersed, have a flattened base. They raise the epidermis and penetrate it with a characteristic central, shiny black papilla. The perithecia contain numerous fusiform asci, each with a thin apical ring (Congo red), and with 8 spores in one bundle. The spores measure c. 80-100 x 4-4.5 µm, slightly narrower towards the ends, lack septa, are hyaline, have c. 20 small guttules (in brilliant chresyl blue) and have a small globose appendage surrounding one end of each spore. The spores are slightly bent. This is the only pyrenomycete in this collection. It is no doubt a member of the Diaporthales. It differs from Linocarpon in lacking a clypeus, but has similar spores with an apical appendage. The single bambusicolous species described in that genus, L. muroianum I. Hino & Katum., was transferred to Plagiosphaera by Walker (1980: 95). The members of that genus normally have an eccentric ostiolar neck (Barr 1978: 123), so Acerbia culmigena seems to be no better accommodated in that genus. It is possible that a new genus has to be erected for this species.
    Acerbia
(Sacc.) Sacc. is not an alternative. Clements & Shear (1931: 277) cited A. culmigena as the type species, but that has to be A. hyptidis (Henn.) Sacc., as that was the only species in the Ophioceras Sacc. subgen. Acerbia Sacc. (1895: 353), that Saccardo (1899: 619) later raised to generic rank. Acerbia hyptidis should be conspecific with Rosenschoeldia paraguayana Speg. (see ref. in Saccardo 1905: 852), the generic type, described from Hyptis (Lamiaceae). The species has been described to have erumpent - superficial, moriform ascomata. This is certainly not a close relative of Acerbia culmigena.
