Type: Philippines, Luzon, Laguna Prov., Los Baños, on dead culms of Bambusa blumeana, leg. C.F. Baker 50 (S!).
The original material consists of two pieces of an old bamboo culm with numerous ascomata of a Hypoxylon species. Most of the stromata are old with empty, fragile perithecia. There is a second pyrenomycete with semiimmersed, cushion-like, black perithecia, which are all empty.
Entostromata thin, c. 0.6-2 µm, with few uni-peritheciate, non-papillate, closely aggregated, +/- spherical, c. 400 µm wide ectostromata with reddish brown surface. Ostioles umbilicate. Perithecia spherical.
According to Ju & Rogers (1996: 143), H. lenormandii occurs on both monocots and dicots, and "the wide ascospore size range makes us believe that it could be divided into subtaxa".
