    maculosa Penzig & Sacc., Didymella Malpighia 11: 398 (1897a).
  • Type: Indonesia, Java, Bogor, Hort. Bot., in dead thick culms of a bamboo, leg. O. Penzig 753 (PAD!).
This species grows, according to the protologue, "in culmis crassioribus (Bambusae?)". The original material in PAD consists of a 78x21 mm large and 4 mm thick piece of a bamboo culm, that may be estimated to have been about 36 mm wide at this level. The material is old and not in a good condition.
Three different pyrenomycetes were found in this material.
    1. Oxydothis sp., seen also by Penzig & Saccardo (l.c.).
    2. Linocarpon sp., not mentioned by Penzig & Saccardo (see Acerbia culmigena!).
    3. Pteridiospora javanica Penzig & Sacc. A few ascomata were found in two brown spots. They are erumpent, light brown with a small dark papilla, carbonized wall. One small ascoma examined was empty. One large, cracked ascoma contained numerous asci with hyaline ascospores with a submedian septum, measuring c. 24-25 x 4.5 ?µm. The ascomata agree well with the protologue of Didymella maculosa, but the ascospores should be larger (40-45 x 8 ?µm) and with a median septum in that species. This must be considered a doubtful species until material with such spores has been found.
