Abstract

Eriksson O.E., Baral H.-O., Currah R.S., Hansen K., Kurtzman C.P., Rambold G. and Laessøe T. (Eds). 2001. Outline of Ascomycota - 2001. - Myconet 7: 1-88.
The present classification contains all accepted genera and taxa above the generic level in phylum Ascomycota.

Introduction

This new version of Outline of Ascomycota is based on earlier classifications in Opera Botanica (60, 1981), Mycotaxon (15, 1982), Systema Ascomycetum (1-16, 1982-1998), and Myconet (1 and 3, 1997 and 1999). The Outline is published in an electronic version (http://www.umu.se/myconet/Myconet.html) and in a printed version at intervals. It contains all accepted genera and higher taxa in Ascomycota. For synonymous generic names, we refer to Eriksson & Hawksworth (1998) and Kirk et al. (2001). Since 1986, all changes are first presented in the series Notes on ascomycete systematics (Nos 1-2439, Systema Ascomycetum 5-16, Nos 2440-3302, Myconet 2- ) before they are implemented in the Outline.

Responsible for the Notes and the acceptance / rejection of new concepts are now seven Boards of specialists. The Chairs of these Boards are the Editors of the present Outline (Web Editor: O.E. Eriksson). They are also members of an Ascomycota Board that decides about the classification of the highest taxa in Myconet (subphyla, classes).

We are still far from a natural system of Ascomycota. We need much more information from both morphological and molecular studies before we know the relationships between all taxa and polytomies are resolved. An effort should be made to reduce the number of incertae sedis taxa and to incorporate mitosporic fungi in the system.

Phylum ASCOMYCOTA - *
Subphylum TAPHRINOMYCOTINA - *

This subphylum is certainly paraphyletic, but the group is generally accepted (often as class Archiascomycetes), and the taxa usually cluster together at the base of ascomycete trees in phylogenetic analyses. Further molecular studies will probably make it possible to improve the classification of the higher taxa.

  Class Dothideomycetes

This class and the Chaetothyriomycetes corresponds to Loculoascomycetes in some earlier classifications and is often referred to as "bitunicate ascomycetes". The bootstrap support for this class is low in phylogenetic analyses of SSU rDNA data. Five orders are recognized now. The position of many families and genera of the class is uncertain, as molecular information is missing. Some families will probably have to be transferred to the Chaetothyriomycetes when more molecular data are available.

Class Lecanoromycetes

This class is temporarily used for the majority of the discolichens, but it is not strongly supported in phylogenetic analyses . Five orders are tentatively recognized: Agyriales, Gyalectales, Lecanorales, Lichinales, and Pertusariales. Four suborders are accepted in the Lecanorales. Two of them correspond to Peltigerales and Teloschistales.

Class Leotiomycetes

This class is not supported by any high bootstrap values, but the taxa usually cluster together in phylogenetic analyses. The order Helotiales seems to be heterogeneous, but more DNA data are needed before it can be split. Provisionally, only the genus Leotia is accommodated in the family Leotiaceae, whereas the the conserved name Helotiaceae is used for the remaining species.

Class Orbiliomycetes

The family Orbiliaceae is accommodated in the order Orbiliales, class Orbiliomycetes, ad interim names for taxa that are strongly supported in DNA studies.

••Orbiliales ad int. 2001 - *

Class Pezizomycetes

The class contains a single order, Pezizales C. Bessey. It is usually not supported by high bootstrap values, but is morphologically well defined by the operculate ascus, etc. The bootstrap support for infraordinal taxa is often high in analyses of SSU rDNA sequences.
