First Foray 2002

Robert Lücking (The Field Museum), Harrie Sipman (Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem), Susan Will-Wolf, Marie Trest and Matthew Nelsen (University of Wisconsin-Madison) formed the foreign party during the first TICOLICHEN foray to Costa Rica in June and July 2002. Together with Loengrin Umaña, Enia Navarro (INBio), Fernando Fernandez (visiting Ascomycete specialist from The Field Museum), and Daniela Lizano, student at the University of Costa Rica under the supervision of Julieta Carranza (specialist in Basidiomycetes), they visited more than 20 different localities, ranging from lowland rainforest to mid-elevation savannas to paramo, in La Amistad International Park, Las Tablas Protection Zone, Tapantí National Park (all in La Amistad - Pacífico Conservation Area), Los Santos Forest Reserve, Carara National Park (Pacífico Central Conservation Area), Irazú National Park, and La Selva Biological Station (Cordillera Volcánica Central Conservation Area). All together, they collected some 9,000 specimens (including duplicates), which were mounted, identified to genus level, and databased during a subsequent workshop at INBio. Screening of the material resulted in an estimated total of 800-1,000 species, with many new records for Costa Rica and a set of potentially new taxa in genera such as Aspidothelium, Coenogonium, Dictyonema, Echinoplaca, Lobariella, Ocellularia, Phaeographina, and possibly Multiclavula.
