Training - UCR Lichen Course

The first tropical lichen course ever held in Costa Rica was carried out at the Universidad de Costa Rica in October 2002, just after the first field trip of the TICOLICHEN project. The 1-week course, organized by the PI Robert Lücking and local collaborator Julieta Carranza, included 19 students from the University of Costa Rica and INBio. Besides an introduction to lichenology, students were trained in lichen morphology and anatomy, their taxonomy and systematics, collection and preparation techniques, and specific methods of phylogenetic and ecological research with lichens. Among many other thing, the students produced a phenotype-based phylogeny of selected genera and species in the lichen family Graphidaceae. At the end of the course, a field trip to the Cerro de la Muerte region (Tapantí National Park in La Amistad - Pacífico Conservation Area) and Los Santos Forest Reserve in Pacífico Central Conservation Area) gave all the opportunity to apply their newly acquired knowledge and to observe these fascinating organisms in their natural habitats.
