Cultural Connections Event: "Gathering to Behold Wellness"
During the With Our Hands: Crafting Culture program year, the American Indian Center and the Korean American Resource and Cultural Center partnered to feature a cross-cultural comparative presentation of traditional handcrafted objects of protection and healing.
To gain a better understanding of how different cultures respond to the common concern of warding off harm and evil, participants explored the histories behind the Ojibwe Jingle Dress a handcrafted dress used for healing smallpox and Korean jangseung, or guardian poles, placed outside Korean villages to protect the community from illness. During the presentations, women from the American Indian Center danced in the Jingle Dress while men drummed, and representatives from the Korean American Resource and Cultural Center delivered a visual presentation that included many images of Korean guardian poles.
