Explore the World in Chicago with Cultural Connections:
A Partnership of Ethnic Museums and Cultural Centers
Why is there cultural diversity? What is culture? What makes cultural diversity important?
Cultural Connections, a partnership of The Field Museum and over twenty Chicago-area ethnic museums and cultural centers, provides a unique opportunity to explore these important questions and the world in Chicago!
As a program participant in Cultural Connections, you will become an "urban anthropologist," using the comparative framework of Common Concerns, Different Responses. You will experience "first voice" accounts and performances, examine museum collections, and participate in fascinating discussions that illuminate the reasons for cultural differences. As you learn more about your neighboring communities through their cultural institutions, you will forge cultural connections and deepen your appreciation of Chicago's cultural diversity.
Six events take place during a program year (September to June). Each event is a comparative collaboration between two or more Cultural Connections partners. Events are organized around an annual theme. This year's is “Creating Community.” Under this theme, partners examine not only the goings-on at community gatherings, but more important, how members come to share an outlook and sense of identity that includes some degree of responsibility for one another. Specific events have explored the place of festivals in creating group solidarity, the role of organizations in creating opportunities when they are otherwise scarce, and how artistic activity builds important bonds. All consider the particular circumstances and history that shape different creative responses to creating community.
