From the spring of 2001 until the spring of 2007, Cultural Connections included Parent Field Trips to partner organizations. While discontinued, this initiative was important to developing Cultural Connections model of community collaboration and continues to inform the development of partnerships under the Chicago Cultural Alliance umbrella, especially those designed to reach youth and families.
Parent Field Trips connected Cultural Connections partner organizations with Chicago-area parents. With help from the Chicago Public Schools' Office of Language and Cultural Education, Cultural Connections brought parents to partner cultural centers and ethnic museums outside of parents' own communities, thus enhancing their understanding of the breadth of the city's diversity.
Each group visited two partner organizations and participated in a cross-cultural comparison workshop facilitated by Cultural Connections staff or CAPA (Chicago Association of Practicing Anthropology) members. These visits connected to the yearly Cultural Connections program theme and through comparison helped parents develop a better understanding of both other ethnic groups in Chicago and their own community.
To ensure the accessibility of the fieldtrips to parents, CC staff provided or arranged for translation services for all trips and for childrens activities as necessary.
