Community Involvement and Conservation Education
The long-term success of conservation initiatives ultimately depends on the degree to which local communities embrace conservation efforts as their own. ECP is fostering and supporting involvement of local communities in conservation action as well as providing informal educational outreach that stimulates awareness, develops skills, and promotes action for sustained conservation behavior.
Community Involvement
Using a technique known as asset mapping, ECP works with the Museums Center for Cultural Understanding and Change to identify and support the partnerships needed for sustainable local participation in conservation efforts. Where possible, ECP promotes small-scale projects that stimulate local commitment to conservation by providing ecologically sound economic incentives. Programs focus on building capacity to monitor environmental changes and economic outcomes as well as to export successful practices to neighboring communities.

Conservation Education
ECP provides environmental education programs and expertise that build wide support and ownership of conservation activities. Using research and experience on how people learn and infusing content from the Museums collections and research, ECP develops educational resources focused on stimulating awareness, developing skills to make informed decisions, and promoting action for sustained conservation behavior. We also provide technical assistance to schools, museums, and protected areas in the design and implementation of conservation-oriented programs, exhibits, and visitor centers that link awareness to action.
