Plant displays have always challenged exhibit designers for one simple reason: the most common method of plant preservation is drying, a process that shrivels the leaves and renders specimens useless for display. In the 19th century, designers recreated specimens using cloth from millinery samples, but these materials ultimately wither and change color under museum lights.
Early this century, artists and scientists at The Field Museum developed a new method of creating plant models. This revolutionary technique created plant reproductions with permanent, realistic and beautiful appearances.
