Taxidermist by training, sculptor by avocation, inventor by necessity, and naturalist by passion, Carl Akeley revolutionized the art and science of taxidermy. While working at The Field Museum from 1895-1909, Akeley devised a practical solution to the problem of realistic plant reproduction.

While producing the diorama The Four Seasons, Akeley hit upon the idea of molding leaves from wax, using plaster molds made from actual specimens. He and his wife, Delia, patiently hand-made each of the 17,000 leaves in the four dioramas of that series. This process took countless hours to complete and yielded a stunning result. These dioramas provided an example of how other such exhibits might be constructed.
