Ian has only recently moved to the USA to take up his position at the Field Museum, having formerly been based in the UK. Ian was awarded a Ph.D. by the University of London before moving on to take up a series of post-doctoral research positions, including a Leverhulme Special Research Fellowship at Cardiff University in Wales. Ian specializes in coal-forming environments, studying their paleobotany, coal petrology and palynology. He also has a particular interest in ancient wildfires, and has recently published an article describing what is, to date, the earliest wildfire event yet recorded.
