Education:
- Ph.D. in Botany, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2004: Molecular Systematics of Carex section Ovales (Cyperaceae)
- B.A. in English, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1994: Creative Writing emphasis
- Coursework through Wildlands Studies Program, San Francisco State University, Fall 1991
Research Interests:
Current Research:
My main area of research is currently the taxonomy and chromosomal evolution of the sedge genus Carex (Cyperaceae), the largest angiosperm genus in North America and one that is ecologically important in wetlands and woodlands. I am also collaborating on taxonomic and phylogenetic studies of elms (Ulmus), oaks (Quercus), and Croton [link: http://www.botany.wisc.edu/croton/index.html], as well as simulation studies of BDM speciation models and phylogenetic analysis of molecular data. I am currently completing a field guide to Wisconsin sedges illustrated by my wife, designed for nonspecialists.
