Research Interests:

My main research interests are the systematics and phylogeny of Ascomycota, especially lichen-forming fungi and their diversity. I focus on some crustose groups that have their centre of distribution in the southern Hemisphere. Additionally I am interested in the secondary chemistry and chemotaxonomy of these organisms.

Current Research:

Currently I am working on the higher level phylogeny of eusascomycetes and the phylogenetic relationships of different classes distinguished in this group of fungi using nuclear and mitochondrial sequences of the small and large subunit of the ribosomal DNA.

Other current projects include character evolution in lichen-forming fungi of Pertusariales and the Parmeliaceae based on molecular trees and using likelihood based approaches coupled with Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo tree sampling to accommodate uncertainty in phylogenetic estimates.

I am also cooperating with Imke Schmitt in her studies on Pertusariales, Ruth del Prado in her studies on ascoma evolution, Nora Wirtz in her phylogeographic studies on Antarctic lichens, and Armin Mangold who is working on the systematics of a tropical lichens family in Australia.
