| April - June 2002 Arun K. Pandey Professor University Department of Botany TM Bhagalpur University Bhagalpur 812007 India During his three-months stay at the Field Museum, Dr Pandey collaborated with Dr Jun Wen (Botany) to gather molecular data from the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA. The main aim of his visit was to conduct collaborative research on evolution of Araliaceae in India using molecular markers. In India the family is represented by 15 genera distributed mostly in north and north eastern region and the taxonomy of Indian Araliaceae is highly controversial. A molecular systematic study of Aralia and Panax in India has provided interesting results. This is a pilot molecular systematic study for plants in India using DNA markers and phylogenetic methods. |
