As part of her doctoral studies at the Autonomous National University of Mexico (UNAM), Laura Guzman-Davalos is working with Greg Mueller (Botany) on a phylogenetic analysis of the genus Gymnopilus subg. Annulati (Fungi, Agaricales, Cortinariaceae) using morphological and molecular data.

During her three-month stay at the Field Museum, she is sequencing the ITS region of nuclear ribosomal DNA for about 40 species of Gymnopilus.
