BugCamp 1997

The following year, more students and another teacher, Jane Zimmerman, joined the ranks of the Diptera Disciples. Basic lessons in entomology, led by Field Museum Insect Division staff, accompanied the databasing work to make the experience even more enriching. Seeing the potential of the early prototype of BugCamp, Dr. Ballard wrote a grant proposal to the National Science Foundation (NSF). The NSF awarded Ballard a CAREER grant that included BugCamp as an educational component. A second proposal was written for the Nancy Ryerson Ranney Leadership Grant. The award of this grant allowed BugCampers to collect insects at Ryerson Woods Conservation Area. Additionally, students helped create a pamphlet and representative display collection of common Ryerson Insects. The foundation of BugCamp was laid.
