Hemiptera
(true bugs)

Not all insects are bugs! Technically, the term "bug" refers to insects in the Hemiptera. Shown to the left is a stink bug (family Pentatomidae). If disturbed, these plant feeders emit a strong odor that wards off many attackers.

Below the stink bug is a cicada. These insects are very common in the Midwest and can be heard on hot summer days. Males call to attract females by distorting a sound-making organ.

The plant-feeding aphids produce a sugary by-product known as honeydew. Ants oftentimes defend a herd of aphids to gain access to this honeydew. If you disturb the aphids slightly, you may be lucky enough to see the ants react.
