The Purchase of Sue

Going once . . . Going twice . . . Going to Chicago!

Following the long custody battle, Sue was sold at Sotheby’s auction house in New York on Saturday, October 4, 1997. The bidding began at 10:15 a.m. and just eight minutes later The Field Museum had purchased Sue for nearly $8.4 million – the most money ever paid for a fossil.

While the auction itself lasted only minutes, months of planning went into the purchase of Sue. The Field Museum built a unique partnership with McDonald’s Corporation, the Walt Disney World Resort, and private individuals. Together, their generous financial gifts helped enable The Field Museum to provide a permanent home for Sue.

Without this team effort, Sue might have ended up someplace where her bones could not be studied by researchers or seen by the public. (© The Field Museum GN88537)
