The banana — people all over the World love this colorful fruit. From the produce aisles of supermarkets in the United States to the stalls of bustling open-air markets in Ecuador, we find these gold, green and red crescent-shaped fruits stacked high.

Bananas are one of the World’s most famous fruits. In fact, while the average American eats nearly 30 pounds (14 kg) of bananas each year, in some areas of East Africa where it is a staple food, the annual consumption may reach 550 pounds (250 kg)! Sweet bananas are sliced over cereal, peeled for snacks and blended into creamy desserts. Starchy bananas, commonly called plantains, are ground into flour, wedged and fried into chips and fermented into beer.  Just what is so special about this fruit that makes us — go bananas?
