The rich aroma of coffee evokes images of commuters scurrying to work, people socializing in cafes, students studying late at night, and families reading the paper on a lazy weekend morning. Coffee is a common beverage shared by people of many nationalities, incomes, and professions. In fact, every day over one-third of the world drinks coffee. In the United States alone over 110 million adults drink coffee every day, totaling 350 million cups of coffee!

With coffee shops on nearly every corner, coffee now seems remarkably familiar.  But behind the chic marketing of this popular beverage lies a rich history of coffee’s influence on religious scholars in Arabia, holy men smuggling seeds out of Mecca, and colonial domination in Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Take a sip of this story as we trace the coffee bean from a tree in its native Ethiopia to the countertop of your local barista.
