Rice is the main food source for over one-third of the World. In Asia rice provides people with over half of their daily calories. But rice is more than food. In Japan rice seeds were once considered so sacred that only the Emperor received more honor. In the United States wedding guests often sprinkle newlyweds with rice grains to give them good luck. Worshippers in Bali shape colored rice into conical cakes as offerings to the gods. Italian restaurants serve creative variations of risotto and Indian cooks prepare secret recipes of curried rice. Mexicans enjoy chile-spiced rice and horchata, sweetened rice water, almost every day. Now grown from Brazil to California and Senegal to Taiwan, rice enriches the World.
