This child's cap of vicuña dates from 1893. A knitted stocking cap called a "chullo," is typical of the highlands of both Peru and Bolivia. Caps are worn at all times by children of both sexes, and by men, who often wear it as a layer under a felt hat, as illustrated in the 1977 photo taken in Cuzco, Peru, by J. C. Odland. Traditionally it is made in llama wool or alpaca, which has a hollow fiber and is known for its lightness and warmth. 29 cm long x 18 cm wide |
