Introduction

Below you will find a listing of where the concept of interdependence can be found in the Illinois State Standards, the National Science Standards, and the Project 2061 Science and Math Benchmarks.

Project 2061 Benchmarks
3-5th Grade
By the end of 5th grade students should know:
Organisms interact with one another in various ways besides providing food. (Pollination, seed dispersal)

6-8th Grade
By the end of 8th grade students should know that:
Two types of organisms may interact with one another in several ways: They may be in a producer/consumer, predator/prey, or parasite/host relationship. Or one organism may scavenge or decompose another. Relationships may be competitive or mutually beneficial.

Illinois State Standard
12.B: Know and apply concepts that describe how living things interact with each other and with their environment.
Late Elementary, 12.B.2a: Describe relationships among various organisms in their environments (e.g., predator/prey, parasite/host, food chains and food webs).

Performance Descriptors for Illinois State Standard 12B
4-5th Grade
Diagramming a simple relationship between plants and/or animals (i.e., predator/prey, parasite/host, consumer/producer) commonly found in local habitats.

6-7th Grade
Identifying different niches and relationships found among organisms in an Illinois habitat.
