Common Questions about King Tutankhamun

For fun facts about Egypt’s most celebrated ruler, check in with us regularly as we count down to the opening of Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs. Every two weeks, we’ll answer another of your 8 most frequently asked questions about the intriguing “boy-king” as we await his arrival in Chicago!

1) Why was Tutankhamun's tomb so important?

It was one of the few almost completely intact Egyptian tombs ever discovered.

While archaeologists have found several Egyptian tombs, most were looted long ago by grave robbers. Tutankhamun’s was the first pharaoh’s tomb ever discovered with its magnificent grave goods intact.

Sometimes people think that the wealth of the tomb and its “secret” location meant that King Tutankhamun was an important ruler. In fact, he was a relatively minor king whose name didn’t even appear in the king lists of the time. His grave was so well hidden merely because it was accidentally covered over during the construction of another, more important pharaoh’s tomb.

It’s likely that the graves of renowned kings were filled with even greater riches, but the prominence of their tombs meant that they were more easily located and ransacked.
