7) Was King Tutankhamun’s Tomb really cursed?
Nope, it was only cursed with imaginative reporters.
The story of the curse began due to the untimely death of Lord Carnarvon, the founder of the expedition. Lord Carnarvon hadn’t been a well man for years, but when he died just six months after the discovery of the tomb, the press’s imagination kicked into high gear.
Lord Carnarvon had given the London Times the exclusive rights to breaking news from the dig site. Reporters from other papers, frustrated with the lack of forthcoming information, jumped on the opportunity to create their own headlines.
One inspired journalist went so far as to mistranslate a perfectly harmless bit of hieroglyphics into a dire threat of death against anyone who opened the tomb. With this error, the story of the curse was born.
