For fun facts about Egypt’s most celebrated ruler, check in with us regularly as we count down to the opening of Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs. Every two weeks, we’ll answer another of your 8 most frequently asked questions about the intriguing “boy-king” as we await his arrival in Chicago!

6) Was King Tutankhamun’s murdered?

No, forensic evidence doesn’t indicate Tutankhamun’s death was due to foul play.

The theory that Tutankhamun may have been murdered came about after a 1968 x-ray showed two bone fragments floating at the back of Tutankhamun’s skull. Investigators suggested a blow to the head may have caused this damage, and the story of Tut’s murder soon circulated around the world.

However, CT scans sponsored by National Geographic and performed by a team of Egyptian scientists have proven that King Tutankhamun wasn’t bludgeoned to death. The scans reveal that there is no evidence for a partially healed injury to the back of the head. The two bone fragments appear to have come from damage to the skull caused either by the embalmers after Tutankhamun’s death or from Carter’s dig team during the first rough examination of the mummy. .
