Common Questions about King Tutankhamun

For fun facts about Egypt’s most celebrated ruler, check in with us regularly as we count down to the opening of Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs. Every two weeks, we’ll answer another of your 8 most frequently asked questions about the intriguing “boy-king” as we await his arrival in Chicago!

4) Was King Tutankhamun buried in haste, indicating the “cover-up” of a murder plot?

No, forensic evidence shows that his mummy underwent the same lengthy embalming process accorded to all pharaohs of his time.

Tutankhamun’s brain was extracted through the nose and his internal organs were removed and mummified individually. CT scans reveal at least five different types of embalming materials used throughout the body. These details indicate that Tutankhamun underwent traditional, highly elaborate, and careful mummification procedures—as process which took at least 70 days.

Although his tomb has an unusual layout for pharaohs of his era, this was not an effort to quickly “hide” the body. A pharaoh’s grand tomb took decades to build, and Tutankhamun’s death after only a nine-year reign meant that he had to be buried in any tomb that was nearing completion—probably that of an official and not his own.
